Chocolate Eyeglasses
This December I attempted chocolate molds, eyeglasses in particular. This was another thank you gift that I wanted to give out to the people that donated to my Remote Area Medical trip fundraiser.
I decided to use Wilton's colored chocolate pieces because I didn't want to fuss with mixing colors and I was glad I did because I was very happy with the colors and their melting properties. Most of the 12 oz bags came from Joann's Fabrics (with a bunch of coupons of course) and a few I purchased on Amazon.
I first tried to melt the chips in a decorating squeeze bottle but the top popped off and made a HUGE mess. After I quickly wiped up the color from my white kitchen cabinets and salvaged what I could from the bottles (what a waste!), I decided to heat the pieces in small glass bowls so that I could stir them easier.
I used a spoon to glob the black chocolate into the lens portion of the mold and used a toothpick to spread it evenly. I set the molds in the refrigerator to solidify while I worked on the next mold. I had 3 molds that had 3 glasses in each tray so there was plenty of time in between for them to set. When it was time to do the frame part of the glasses I had to be careful to not more the lens part when spreading around the colors..some moved and turned out goofy in the end.
I broke quite a few eyeglasses when trying to remove them from the molds because of the skinny bridge part that connects the lenses. I suppose this would be why they were on sale.
I found better success when I flipped the mold over onto the counter and pressed it out, rather than trying to pull the chocolate up and out. The many of the broken ones were salvageable if there was a clean break...just "glue" it together with a very small amount of liquid chocolate.
I think this wasn't an ideal mold shape for chocolate, but I made it work and am happy with the results anyways.
Enjoy!
